The Sounds of the Sea

About

Originally shrine maidens from Sui-no-Sato, this duo of sisters left their life under the sea to bring their love of music to Eorzea and beyond.

Name: Iori Kotone

The older of the Kotone sisters; bubbly, vivacious, and slightly narcissistic, Iori dreams of nothing more than to one day become an idol and perform all across the crystal! Is quite popular with Namazu, for some reason...

Table of ContentsSolo Act

Solo ActLast night…Iori was still furious. She sank into the couch in Seda’s room, tapping her foot in an agitated rhythm as she attempted to calm herself down. How could her sister do this to her? To THEM? The entire act was going to go up in flames, solely because Aja had to be selfish – no, worse, she was actively trying to hurt her. Why ELSE would she seek out the ONE person Iori hated to date?…ok, fine, Iori hated more than one person, but not someone she had to interact with so regularly! And now Aja was acting all… different. The going out all the time and the drinking and the dark clothes and dyed hair… obviously, this was all that Isaz’s fault. He probably… talked her into dressing that way because he was into it, that freak. It’s the only explanation for her sudden shift.Memories trickled into Iori’s mind – ones of Aja when they were children, following her around, needing to be sung to sleep at night, and always looking up to her big sister for guidance...…and now? They were almost never around each other, and any time they were, they were almost guranteed to start fighting with each other. Now, Iori was willing to admit that some of that was her fault – her drive and perfectionist tendencies (and, yes, maybe a hint of self-centeredness) causing her to lash out at Aja any time something went wrong. But really when you think about it, that was kind of Aja’s fault. After all, no one asked Aja to follow her out there. But Aja had said that she wanted to help support her big sister’s dreams, despite Iori being the one who tried to talk her out of it!But, obviously, all of that talk of ‘support’ and ‘duos’ was fake or forgotten, since clearly Aja didn’t care about Iori’s dream, or hells, even this thing they’d built together. She was off doing her own thing and making her own life and goals and plans and……and Iori wasn’t a part of those plans anymore. Because Aja was never the one who needed her sister. In an instant, the rage faded and, without the anger to keep it away, the heavy weight of sadness settled over her like a blanket. She felt nauseated as the cold emptiness Seda’s room grew increasingly suffocating around her.Where even was Seda, anyway? She had just been downstairs getting a drink and speaking with Suzuma, and then was supposed to be right up… right? How long had it been? At least an hour, surely…She glanced over at her barely-touched drink from the bar downstairs. Hypocritical, she realized, of her to criticize her sister’s drinking habits when her first reaction to getting angry was to get a drink… Picking up the glass, she moved to the window and flung the remaining contents outside – it hadn’t been a very good drink anyway (loporrits make terrible bartenders). And now obviously she’d need to return the glass downstairs… and maybe see what the hells had been taking Suzuma and Seda so long while she was down there...-Iori arrived in the downstairs bar to find no one.Not in the bar, nor by the stage, nor in the lobby… Both Suzuma and Seda were nowhere to be found. Setting the emptied glass on the bar counter, she sighed.“I guess I always wanted to be a solo act, right?”-Iori returned to the room she and her sister shared. She had noticed some changes over the past few weeks as she came in and out, but she was always in such a rush that she had failed to notice how many of Aja’s things were disappearing from the room…After changing out of her stage costume, she left her room, walked down the hall, crossed the empty foyer, and quietly exited the theater.

Table of ContentsA Sister to Dye For

A Sister to Dye For
As soon as her feet crossed the threshold into the small apartment she and Isaz shared, whatever merciful being that had been holding the floodgates of her eyes closed, finally decided to abandon its post. Tears streaked like rain on window panes down Aja’s cheeks as she quietly made her way to the wardrobe to change.
She had no idea where Isaz was, likely behind her doing his usual watching and waiting. Not rude or dismissive but patient, as he was with all things regarding her. Something her sister would never be able to understand- patience. The thought made her cry harder, heaving sobs, as she pulled at the stupid floofy ribbon on the back of the dress, ripping it.Why did you dye it black, Aja. I thought we agreed on pink and green again, Aja. I guess you didn’t get my note again, Aja.No, she hadn’t gotten the note. There hadn’t been anything pinned on the costume box this time. She figured regardless which color Iori wore, black would compliment it and make her sister stand out. She also figured Iori wouldn’t be in black, negating the risk of them showing up in the same color or worse, mismatched tones of the same color.Aja blows her nose into the large patch of fabric ribbon she had accidentally pulled from the dress, then tosses it to the side. She hated the dress and- more- hated all it stood for. She had been trying so hard to mend her relationship with Iori. Showing up together, wearing the costume she hated, dedicating a song to her, letting her take the first bard shift at The Coffeedral… and none of it mattered. Because now Aja was dating someone her sister hated. A person Iori barely had tried to know. She was tired of Isaz getting blamed for her decisions. She’d dyed her hair well before even meeting him, let alone dating him. But, Iori was only going to see what Iori wanted to see.She does her best to dry her eyes before meeting Isaz back out in the living quarters. He’s still in his suit, an ear twitching toward her. They both remain quiet as they curl up by the pillow pile near the fireplace and sleep. The next morning, Aja wakes early, a plan having formed in her mind as she had cried herself to sleep that night. She pulls away from the still sleeping viera and leaves the little apartment. A quick visit to the alchemists guild and she has the supplies needed. In that time, it seemed Isaz had awoken as well and found something to do. She was alone as she returned to the apartment, first opening all the windows then grabbing some old towels. The solution she applied to her hair smelled like burning pitch and felt similar enough on her scalp. Yet in about a quarter bell, it began to fully dissolve, leaving behind smooth locks in her natural coloring. No more acid green and black, just the soft color of seafoam with highlighted strands of honey. She hated it. The image staring back at her was once more the scared little girl from the undersea bubble that knew nothing of the world. Innocent. Naive. She throws her hairbrush at the mirror, the strands stuck within the teeth a mixture of old and new colors and new-old colors. It bounces off the glass harmlessly.Aja folds her arms across the vanity, forehead resting on her arms as she once more begins to sob. She’d be the little sister Iori wanted. But she wasn’t giving up Isaz. She’d hold her tongue all she needed to, she’d stop dyeing her hair. She’d wear stupid pastel colors again. At least then her boyfriend wouldn’t get blamed for things he had no control over. And maybe, just maybe, Iori would learn to give him a chance. It was silly of her to think any of this would make an ilm of difference to her sister but well, she was going to try. Once she stopped crying at least.
